Cantine Belisario was established in 1971 and owns the most vines in the Matelica region- 300 hectares of which 24 hectares are certified organic. The climate in Matelica is more continental and the combination of warm days and cool nights gives a longer growing season and lovely aromatic qualities to the wines. Vineyards to the south enjoy a Mediterranean climate and are more strongly impacted by the Adriatic Sea, including the cooling fog that's a regular presence in these sites. Only 3 percent of Marche's surface area is flat, so hillside vineyards are a given, and calcareous, clay, and/or limestone soils dominate, depending on the appellation. Belisario is the largest producer of a typical white wine from the Marche: Verdicchio di Matelica DOC. All the vineyards are close to the cellar at a maximum distance of 10 minutes, all are located in the Alta Vallesina.
