About the Wine: The roches blanches express the mineral memory of our limestone terroirs.
At castelviel, the highest point in the gironde, the sauvignon blanc thrives on clay-limestone soils where fossilised oyster beds outcrop while on the limestone plateau of roquefort, the merlot vinified on the fruit gives all its richness to this cuvée.
Cultivation of the vine in organic agriculture

About the producer: This is ancient land bearing traces of the Neolithic Age, 5 000 years B.C. Roquefort lies on a promontory (a Gallic oppidum area with a triangular form) delimited by several streams, the Engranne in the north-east, the Petite Engranne or the Roquefort stream in the south-east (see vine map). The very steep slopes on each side of this promontory discouraged attackers.. A covered alley, i.e. a burial place, dates from this period. (14 metres long by 1.40 wide comprising 22 blocks and 3 tables are still present). Numerous historians have studied this exceptional site and in 1858, historian Léo Drouyn, discovered remains of pottery, chipped flint implements and the also the remains of a wall. In 1922, Abbé Labrie revealed the existence of numerous sepulchres, plus that of vases, shells and many fragments of flint. All year long, the covered alley of Roquefort received a host of visitors, either history-lovers or simply wine-lovers. Château Roquefort This 18th century château was completely refurbished by the Bellanger family from 1978 to 1989, respecting the authenticity and charm. During the rehabilitation, many hidden treasures were discovered such as the two magnificent vaulted rooms of the stables, now transformed as the cellar and renovated with bricks from the Loire Valley. The dovecot, built in the 16th century, was entirely renovated from 1996 to 1998. The roof and machinery were reconstructed identically by the Compagnons de France. On the site of Roquefort, we must also note the “vieux château”. Indeed, in 1291 Edward I of England authorized Gaillard de Grésignac to build a stronghold in Roquefort and the ruins are visible to this day, partly restored in 2001.

Today Frédéric and Anne Bellanger run the estate: Jean and Christiane Bellanger son Frédéric is driven by this same family energy: he took over the reins of Château Roquefort in 1995 and continued developing the estate, which now covers 240 hectares. He sought to expand the vineyard, but above all to integrate it within its exceptional setting of forest, fields and meadows. Highly committed to biodiversity, in his view, the only way to enhance heritage is by listening to the terroir and respecting the generosity of its nature. Surrounded by a faithful professional team, he works to constantly improve the quality of the wines and to create exceptional new cuvees.

He was recently joined by his wife Anne… Together they have succeeded in strengthening the estate’s soul by paying tribute to its history and traditions but also by pushing towards a modern era of responsible and expert winemaking.  They share a passion for wine and the products of nature, products which tell our history and culture and allow us to enjoy unforgettable tasting moments and emotional experiences. They both want to introduce the world to these unique terroirs where good living, history and heritage all merge together to create excellence.

The authors of the future could be Victoire, Inès, Eva and Raphaëlle… The four daughters of Anne and Frédéric are each learning how to produce and share good wine in their own way. They will soon be ready to contribute to this unique historic heritage with the ambition to continue keeping the Roquefort spirit alive…
