Style: Funky White Wine
Producer: Viticultores de Santiago del Teide y Envinate
Grape: 100% Listán Blanco (Palomino)
Where: Canary Islands
Country: Spain
Envínate 'Benje' Blanco is a volcanic, high-altitude white wine from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Made from 100% old-vine Listán Blanco (Palomino), it features a crisp, saline profile with vivid citrus, smoky minerality, and texture imparted by partial aging under flor yeast
"Mineral, flinty nose with pomelo skins and an implicit chalky, seashell character. Extremely bright on the palate with demandingly high acidity that immediately makes your mouth water. The zingy, crystalline finish delivers purity and austerity. Delicious and gastronomic." - James Suckling

About the Wine: Hand-harvested, partial skin maceration (25%), fermented with wild yeasts in concrete vats, and aged for 8 months in concrete and old French barriques (with a portion aged under a natural veil of flor. 100% Listán Blanco from several old vine parcels around Santiago del Teide. Viticulture here is highly traditional: vines grow untrained, the soil is worked by hand, and no chemicals are used. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts and without temperature control, in a mix of old French oak foudre and concrete tank. A portion of the wine macerates with the skins and a portion under flor. Bottled unfined, unfiltered with a small addition of SO2.

About the Producer: Envínate (translates as "wine yourself") is the brainchild of 4 friends, winemakers Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez. This gang of 4 formed back in 2005 while studying enology at the University of Miguel Hernandez in Alicante. Upon graduation, they formed a winemaking consultancy, which evolved into Envínate, a project that focuses on exploring distinctive parcels mainly in the Atlantic-inflected regions of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. Their collective aim is to make profoundly pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise manner. To this end, no chemicals are used in any of the Envínate vineyards, all parcels are picked by hand, the grapes are foot-trodden, and the wines are fermented exclusively with wild yeasts, with a varying proportion of whole grape clusters included. For aging, the wines are raised in old barrels and concrete, and sulfur is only added at bottling, if needed. The results are some of the most exciting and honest wines being produced in Spain today.
