Style: Blanc Petillant Naturel (Pet Nat) Sparkling
Producer: Channing Daughters
Grapes: 80% Chardonnay, 20% Muscat Ottonel (skin-fermented)
Where: Long Island, New York
Country: USA
Taste:"Our Petillant Naturel, Cuvée Tropical Edition Is a white blend that is bottled at the end of its wild fermentation before it is complete, trapping the carbon dioxide in the bottle resulting in a lightly sparkling or Petillant wine. This is a delicious, aromatic, tropical and playful bottle of wine. Drink cold and enjoy" - James Christopher Tracy, Winemaker.
Vibes with: Serve it well-chilled as a playful aperitif, with a cheese board, spicy takeout, or just on its own on a warm afternoon.
.
Why I carry it: Long Island doesn't get nearly enough credit for the interesting wine coming out of the North and South Forks, and Channing Daughters is one of the best examples of that — natural, low-intervention winemaking with real personality. It's a great bottle for customers who want to explore beyond the usual suspects.
This is a fun, funky one, and exactly the kind of bottle I love putting in customers' hands when they want something a little different. Channing Daughters is a small, family-run winery on the South Fork in Bridgehampton — one of the only wineries on the East End growing this many obscure grape varieties, and true believers in letting a place speak through the wine. Winemaker James Christopher Tracy sources fruit from twenty-five estate acres plus special sites across the North Fork, and works across all three Long Island AVAs.
.
About the Wine: This Pét-Nat is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% skin-fermented Muscat Ottonel, bottled at the end of a wild fermentation before it finishes — trapping the CO2 right in the bottle for a natural, lightly sparkling wine with zero intervention. In Tracy's own words, it's "delicious, aromatic, tropical and playful." Expect a hazy pour, a gentle fizz, and vibrant tropical fruit character from that skin-contact Muscat — this is a wine meant to be fun, not fussed over.

About the Producer: Winemaker: James Christopher Tracy
Atlantic breezes cool the vineyards creating a climate hospitable to a wide array of fascinating grape varieties. They grow and create wines from the white varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Tocai Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Malvasia, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Bianco, and the red varieties Merlot, Blaufrankisch, Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Soon the reds Teroldego, Refosco and Lagrein will join them. They are the only winery on the East End growing and producing wines from many of these grapes. Their home is a beautiful plot of land in Bridgehampton that contains twenty-five acres of vines, small winery and tasting room. They source about fifty percent of their grapes from special sites and people on the North Fork.
They allow the wines to naturally express the earth that grows them. Small and unique vineyard lots of grapes are fermented and bottled separately, bearing a Vineyard Designation and Appellation of Origin. They produce wines bearing all three Long Island AVA’s. The North Fork of Long Island, The Hamptons, and Long Island are all utilized. Whether it is a varietal Sauvignon Blanc from the Mudd Vineyard on the North Fork, Blaufrankisch from our Sylvanus Vineyard on our Estate in Bridgehampton or a blend of varieties and vineyards like their Vino Bianco, which bears a Long Island AVA, they believe in celebrating the place, vineyards and region from which they are lucky enough to produce wine.
