Why I carry it: Long Island makes far more interesting wine than most people realize, and this blend is a perfect example: unusual, expressive, and made by a small winery with a lot of heart behind it. It's a great pick if you like aromatic whites and want to try something local to the Northeast.

This is one of those bottles with a story you can taste. Channing Daughters, the Bridgehampton winery known for making wine from an unusually wide range of grape varieties, created HEART in May 2020, in the middle of quarantine, as a way to celebrate their winery, their community, and the earth. The wine was such a hit that they made it again in 2021.
The 2021 HEART is a "symphonic" white blend of seven grapes: 29% Muscat Ottonel, 21% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Grigio, 18% Tocai Friulano, 6% Gewürztraminer, 5% Pinot Bianco, and 1% Malvasia. The Muscat brings piercing, exotic aromatics, the Pinots and Chardonnay flesh it out, and the Gewürztraminer and Tocai Friulano add freshness and lift. In the glass, expect citrus, peach, yellow apple, mango, and floral notes on a plump, textured palate with clean, cleansing acidity and a long finish. It's dry, generous, and racy at the same time, and it's easy to keep pouring.
Most of the blend was fermented with wild, ambient yeasts in stainless steel (the Gewürztraminer was wild-fermented on its skins), then aged eight months on the lees before blending and bottling in June 2022.
Every bottle wears a label by one of twelve local artists, each inspired by the word "heart." That makes it a fun gift, and part of the fun is collecting a few different labels.

Taste: Aged in French and American oak, this blend presents aromas of black cherry, vanilla and toast. Flavors of dark chocolate, cherry and slight hints of oak are well integrated with structured tannins.
